About The Artist

About Emmy

My ceramic art is handmade, functional, and inspired by nature.  I find the mountains and flowers of Colorado where I live to be endlessly inspirational, and often these elements are directly reflected in my designs.  By inviting the outside environment into my style, I aim to capture the enchanting beauty of the earth from dramatic mountains to tiny wildflowers.  It is this connection with the earth that makes ceramic art so deeply grounding.

This creative path marks a joyful departure from my formal career in the medical field.  In 2024 I embarked on a new life chapter, leaving behind my world of stethoscopes and well-child check-ups to embrace creativity and the creation of ceramic pieces that hold beauty in their everyday use.  I’ve found joy in combining nature and functionality.  While you can often detect the almost medical precision in my approach, I now celebrate the excitement in imperfections through thumbprints, wandering drips, and unexpected glaze results.  For me, these happy imperfections are where the soul lives, reminding us that life is most vibrant when it is a little bit messy and entirely one-of-a-kind.

Why Lupine Lady Pottery?

The most beautiful children’s book ever written is Barbara Cooney’s Miss Rumphius.  The story follows the life of a strong female character, Miss Alice Rumphius, who sets out to fulfill her life promises: to travel, to live by the sea, and to “do something to make the world more beautiful”.  To fulfill this final promise, Alice sows lupine seeds all over her village by the sea and becomes known as “The Lupine Lady”.  The lupine flowers she planted are then enjoyed for generations.  My ceramic art is my way of making the world more beautiful, just as the Lupine Lady did, and I would be humbled if my art is enjoyed for generations.
